All about Zen Gardens

The Zen garden or the Japanese rock garden is a landscape design inspired by Zen Buddhism. Zen gardens are typically found in Zen temples for meditation uses. Nowadays, the use of Zen gardens has extended even to non-Zen Buddhists who still believe in meditation's power to promote well-being.

The concept of a Zen garden is the creation of harmony with the nature's elements in the form of water, sand, pebbles, and rocks. It can be noticed that rocks are the most apparent element of every Zen garden. According to Zen Buddhists, rocks should be arranged in a particular order in order to create a garden filled with energy and meaning. If some greenery is added to the rocks, peace and harmony are manifested in the place.

A Zen garden within a home is a place where all household members can relax and reflect on their thoughts to achieve enlightenment. Having a Zen garden helps family members de-stress after a long and hard day because of the peace and placidity the garden brings in.

Typically, Zen gardens are constructed outside of the house, with a body of flowing water running through the numerous rocks arranged in the garden. However, there are other people who cannot concentrate on meditating in an open space, with the possibility of being distracted with the presence of running and playing children. These people opt to build their Zen gardens in their bedrooms for a more personal relaxation and meditation activity. This proves that a Zen garden can be built in any place a person chooses to. Because the elements can be rearranged every now and then, Zen followers can always have a diversified way of finding oneself through Zen garden meditation.
